Emceed by CTV Montreal’s Mutsumi Takahashi, the QCGN’s 2017 Community Award ceremony took place on October 26 at the prestigious Saint-James Club. Throughout the ceremony, guests paid tribute to the late Gretta Chambers for her exceptional work in building bridges between Quebec’s two solitudes.

Politics is the art of the possible, but for people of principle it can become the art of the impossible. In December 1988, Clifford Lincoln told the National Assembly that he could not remain in a government cabinet that had decided to ignore Liberal party resolutions, the Supreme Court, and every local court that had declared French-only signage unconstitutional. When the rights of the English-speaking community are challenged, the TV cameras usually focus on leaders, neglecting those behind the scenes who do the leg work and negotiate the details. One such unsung hero is James Carter, 69, the McGill University trained social worker who has devoted much of his working life to improving access to health and social services for English-speaking Quebecers. Earl De La Perralle
Life in the crowded Plateau Mont Royal in the post-war years was a time of modest beginnings and big dreams for a young Sidney Stavitsky, aka Sid Stevens, and his friend Earl De La Perralle. The Stavitsky family lived in a cold-water flat on St.Cuthbert, just west of St.Laurent, and Sid and his brother Ted lined up early at the municipal bath on Saturdays to make sure there was enough hot water. De La Parrelle lived nearby on St. Urbain. In 1954, when he was 13, Stevens had an idea: à Launch a handwritten newspaper, with one carbon copy, fill it with local news. With De La Perralle, aged 9, they charged residents two cents “rent” for reading it, then took it to the next customer to collect another two cents. Read more
